About us
The Faculty of Economics, Social Sciences, Geography and Planning (FaSEST = Faculté des Sciences Economiques, Sociales et des Territoires) arose from a merger of five major divisions of the University of Lille. It was created to offer students a diverse range of courses in Social Sciences, Urban Planning, Geography, Cultural Studies, Economics and Management.
The FaSEST offers more than 60 different bachelor’s and master’s programmes. It provides academic and vocational teaching at the highest level, combining theory and practice, with more than 300 professors, lecturers, researchers and external experts. In the fields of Economics and Management, there are more than 100 courses taught in English. For the remaining courses and disciplines, the teaching language is French.

The institute provides outstanding academic and professional higher education in Economics, Management, and Data Sciences combining theory, practice, research, and job training. It benefits from recognized experience and expertise, leading students to effective and fast labour market integration.

The institute provides high-quality academic and professional higher education in sociology, anthropology, demography and cultural studies, combining theory, practice, research and professional training. It has a proven record of accomplishment and expertise, leading to effective and rapid integration of students into the labour market.

The institute offers a diverse range of academic and professional higher education in the fields of geography, urban planning and sustainable development. The study programmes aim to combine teaching in various fields including human and economic geography, physical and environmental geography, geopolitics, demography and spatial planning. Students acquire numerical skills in cartography, GIS and statistics and foreign languages.

Research
The Faculty of Economics, Social Sciences, Geography and Planning is associated with six research units. They cover a wide range of interdisciplinary research topics along the lines of the faculty’s main strengths. Below, we briefly describe each of them.
The research cluster CeRIES conducts scientific studies around a number of subjects that are all related to the understanding and well-being of individuals over their life cycle and how it interacts with the environment. The CeRIES is headed by Michel Castra, Professor of Sociology and researcher in the field of end-of-life and palliative care.
The research cluster Clersé is a multidisciplinary unit that conducts research in the fields of Economics, Sociology and Anthropology. A major focus is set on labour economics, political economy and regulation. The Clersé is headed by Richard Sobel, Professor of Economics and researcher in the field of institutionalist theories and social responsibility.
The research cluster GERiiCO conducts scientific studies in the field of information and communication sciences. Its researchers are involved in the analysis of the processes and applications of information and communication technologies and how they interact with the society and language. GERiiCO is headed by Patrice de la Broise, Professor of Communication Sciences and researcher in the field of communication strategies.
The research cluster LEM is specialized in the field of Quantitative Economics applied to policy-relevant and timely topics. Its researchers are involved in the investigation of the impacts of migration, electoral systems, international trade and finance, and many other topics. The LEM is headed by Etienne Farvaque, Professor of Economics and researcher in the field of international and financial economics.
The research cluster Rime Lab is an interdisciplinary unit working in the fields of Management and Economics. Its members conduct research in all fields of this domain including in finance, consumer behaviour, marketing, international economics, governance of firms, and much more. The Rime Lab is headed by Oliviane Brodin, Professor of Marketing at the University of Artois and researcher in the field of marketing, social psychology and qualitative social sciences.
This research cluster is involved in studying urban planning and its interactions with the environment and the well-being of citizens. Researchers from TVES investigate solutions for the sustainable organisation of public space, preservation and adaptation of natural environments and how industries, human beings and nature can live together. The TVES is headed by Philippe Debout, Professor of Geography and Urban Planning and researcher in the field of environmental geography and integrated management of coastal areas.
The ED SESAM is a PhD programme that trains more than 200 PhD students belonging to the six research units described above. The main disciplines of the doctoral school are:

Team and contacts
François-Olivier Seys is Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Social Sciences, Geography and Planning at the University of Lille. He is Professor of Geography and Planning at Institute of Geography and Planning specialised in population geography and regional urban policy in Europe. Prior to this, François-Olivier served as Vice President for International Affairs at the University of Lille (Lille 1) over two consecutive mandates. He holds a PhD from the University of Lille.

Michael Brei is Vice-Dean for International Relations of the Faculty. He is Professor of Economics at Institute of Economics and Management specialized in banking crisis resolution, financial stability and climate change. Michael is also director of the first year of the master’s programme in banking and finance. Prior to this, Michael worked at the University of West Indies in Barbados and the Bank for International Settlements in Switzerland. He holds a PhD from the University of Bonn.

Anne Bory is Erasmus mobility coordinator for Sociology and Anthropology. She is Associate Professor in Sociology at the Institute of Social Sciences with extensive expertise in the field of sociology, philanthropy and demographics. Anne is member of the French national council of universities (CNU = conseil national des universités) and member of the scientific council of the University of Lille. She holds a PhD from the University Paris 1 (Sorbonne).

Philippe Cardon is Erasmus mobility coordinator for Sociology and Development. He is Associate Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences with a specialisation in nutritional public policies and health policy. Philippe is also director of the master’s programme Philosophy and Sociology and deputy director of the PhD programme ED SESAM. He holds a PhD from the University of Franche-Comté.

David Vandiedonck is Erasmus mobility coordinator in culture and communication. He is Associate Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences with a specialisation in cultural mediation and policies.

Pauline Bosredon is Erasmus mobility coordinator in Geography and Urban Planning. She is Associate Professor at the Institute of Geography and Planning with extensive expertise in the field of cultural heritage, urban planning and social diversity. She is also director of the second year of the master’s programme Urban Planning. Pauline holds a PhD from the University of Rennes.

Humberto Brea Solis is Erasmus mobility coordinator for outgoing students in the field of Economics and Management. He is Associate Professor at the Institute of Economics and Management with a specialisation in the application of quantitative methods within the strategic management field. Humberto holds a PhD from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Claire Naiditsch is Erasmus mobility coordinator for incoming students in the field of Economics and Management. She is Associate Professor at the Institute of Economics and Management with expertise in migration and remittances analysis. She also is the local coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus master’s programme Economics of Globalisation and European Integration (EGEI). Claire holds a PhD from the University Paris 1 (Sorbonne).
